Especially when those behind the wheel are the industry’s toughest critics: automotive journalists. The AJAC’s rigorous evaluation process is based on back-to-back testing in a real-world setting to ensure the results have relevance for consumers. Every member of a test team compares each vehicle in its class – back-to-back, on the same roads and in the same conditions – to ensure a fair evaluation. After conducting their annual test drive of new vehicles in Niagara Falls in late October, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has determined that 2015 will be an excellent year for Kia, as the brand has taken top honours with its first ever all-electric vehicle in its very first year of production. On December 2nd, the 2015 Kia Soul EV was announced the winner of the Best New City Car category. This continues a winning streak for Kia, having won the 2014 AJAC award for Best New Family Car Under $30,000 with the 2014 Kia Soul, and the Best New SUV ($35,000 - $60,000) with the 2014 Kia Sorento. With the Soul EV, Kia was able to make the award-winning Soul even more eco-friendly without sacrificing interior space or versatility. The new Soul EV boasts a comfortable interior with certain components crafted from bio-based antibacterial materials. This earned the Soul EV the first-ever UL Environmental validation in the automotive sector. And the Soul EV’s engine is no less remarkable, with a 360V electric motor that can instantly produce 210 lb-ft. of torque, capable of traveling a combined city/highway distance of up to 149 km on a single charge. With the Soul EV, Kia made sure to do it right by exploring every avenue of going green. This new electric vehicle is a testament to Kia’s “Power To Surprise”. With so many firsts involved in the production and release of the Soul EV, this is clearly, for Kia and their legions of fans and drivers, a cause for celebration.
